Texte au verso : From Cape Town to london, from Toronto to Melbourne, the exultation of the British Empire knew no bounds when Mafeking was relieved in May 1900. At the extreme north of the sea of war, on the border of th Transvaal due west of Pretoria the little garrison held out for seven months with astonishing skill and bravery. The vigilant Baden-Powell and his indominable associates kept the flag of England flying - as determined a company as ever resisted innumerable odds. Cheered now by a message from home, now by a personal letter from the Queen, now by word that Roberts was about to send relief, they maintained their gallant defense till all the world wondered. Relief came from the north by way of Beira and Buluwayo, by Colonel Plumer's troops that had come thousands of miles to the rescue. Simultaneously Colonel Mahon arrived from the south. The Boers resisted the united force for an hour and then withdrew. As the news flashed everywhere the whole empire was delirious with joy. In London the Lord Mayor addressed The crowd while men tossed their silk hats till thousands of them were torn to shreds. Women whose kindred were among the besieged were hysterical with gladness when their pent-up agonies were ended. A new word was coined for the frenzy - London was "mafticking". 11839 Die Mafeking-Feier in der Stadthalle in der Rapftadt, Sud-Afrika Commemorando ma presa di Mafeking, Palazzo di Citta, Cape Town, Africa del Sud.
