Texte au verso : No. 1224. A GLIMPSE OF MINNEAPOLIS FROM THE SYKES BUILDING. Minneapolis (800 feet above sea level), the largest city in Minnesota and the chief flour making place in the world, lies on both sides of the Mississippi, a little above St. Paul, at the point where the river descends fifty feet over the Fall of St. Anthony. It owes its prosperity and rapid growth to the extensive and fertile agricultural district tributary to it, and to the splendid power furnished by the Falls, from 50,000 to 100,00 horse power, according to the season. The Falls were names by Father Hennepin in 1680, but the village of St. Anthony, now included in Minneapolis, was not founded till 1838. The settlement on the opposite, western bank of the river, which received the name of Minneapolis (from Indian "minne", water, and the Greek, "polis", city), was founded in 1852 and became a city in 1867. From 1880 to 1890 the city showed an increase in population of over 252 per cent. The flour mills, over twenty-five in number have a daily capacity of about 75,000 barrels and produce about eighteen million barrels annually. The total value of the manufactures of Minneapolis, including ironware, machinery, street cars, etc., amounts to overt $125,000,000 a year.

Analyse :

Cette vue correspond a une photographie initialement en noir et blanc qui ensuite a bénéficié de l'ajout de couleurs. Il s'agit d'une vue lithographiée en couleur pour laquelle on a utilisé un processus d'impression à base de trois couleurs, comme pour les images des magazines.
Le bâtiment (Sykes Block) a été construit vers 1889. Il est aujourd'hui détruit, la Minnesota Historical Society en possède une vue prise vers 1948.
